Islamic Marriage is not uncommon in Thailand. The Kingdom of Thailand is still one of the favourite marriage destinations among couples with different religions and culture. Thailand is home and has become the second homes of many religious institutions, and it has handled marriages regardless of religion. This is true with the case of Muslim couples coming to Thailand for an Islamic marriage. Speak to a Thailand lawyer for more information.
In Thailand, a Muslim marrying another Muslim or a non-Muslim marrying a Muslim follows a simple process under the Islamic Laws in Thailand. It starts with visiting the National Islamic Centre in Bangkok where the marriage will be held. You would need to make an earlier appointment as the center is not open all week. If a Muslim wants to marry a non-Muslim, then the non-Muslim should convert into Islam first before the Islamic marriage in Thailand can take place. Conversion and Islamic marriage takes place on at same time.
Islamic Marriage Requirements:
- · Passport
- · Single, Divorce Certificate or Death Certificate (if applicable) – for female party
- · 6pcs Photos (1.5in x 1.5 in)
- · For citizens of Kuwait, Bahrain, mostly from U.A.E. and Maldives, a letter of consent from your Embassy in Bangkok is required.
Certain embassies in Thailand require their Muslim citizens to marry under Islamic Marriage before marrying under Thai Law. This marriage in Thailand would take place in a mosque at the Islamic Centre. A Marriage Certificate is issued at the end of the ceremony which usually lasts for a couple of hours. If conversion of non-Muslim has taken place, a conversion certificate is also issued.
It has been a common misconception that Islamic marriage is Thai legal marriage, which are entirely two separate processes.
Islamic marriage is a marriage under Islamic law only, thus, it is a religious marriage which is recognised only by Muslim countries. This marriage cannot be used for legal purposes such as visa application in non-Muslim countries such as the US, UK, Australia and others.
To ease things up, it is advised to hire the services of a legal office to help you throughout the whole process. They can arrange with the Islamic Centre in Thailand and guide you through processes needed by your embassy.
