Marriage in Thailand
Marriage in Thailand needs a bit of assistance while in Thailand. When foreigners come to think of choosing Thailand as their destination for wedding, they might as well consider and know the two types of marriage in the Kingdom. It is performed in two different forms which are:
1. Thai Marriage – a registered marriage registration according to Thai Law.
This would require you to go and confirm your marriage with the local district government office (Amphur) together with your fiancé/e and register your marriage. It would take few days to complete the process as it would start by visiting your embassy in Thailand.
You will need to confirm and make an affidavit stating you are single or free to marry. If previously divorced, you are also required to present your original divorce documents and through this would allow you getting married in Thailand.
Certain embassies require different documents, too. This may include nationals from the France, Belgium, Pakistan, Philippines, India, Malaysia and all others. But most embassies such as USA, UK, Australia and Canada are easy and straightforward regarding documentations.
2. Thai Buddhist Ceremony – a Buddhist ceremony or gathering with monks and relatives.
This is a tradition in respect to Buddhist belief, wherein you do the ceremony following the honour in giving Thai dowry or Sin sod to the parents, making some rituals and all Buddhist sacred words. All these may last for half an hour and destined monks doing chants.

Some couples are excited planning the ceremony in resorts and all, however, please bear in mind that a marriage Buddhist ceremony is not a legal marriage which is recognised by the Thai government. It would further require you to proceed with Thai legal marriage to have it recognised and used for legal purposes in the future, such as joining spouses in Thailand and in overseas. Also note Islamic marriage in Thailand also needs to be registered much like a Buddhist wedding.
On the other hand, registering a marriage under Thai law, is not complicated at all. As long as you have all documents needed, you can make an appointment and visit the district office to have your marriage performed and completed.
