Note that these visas when extended for 12 months does not allow you to work in Thailand. There is a process for doing this inside of Thailand without the need to leave the country.

Marriage Visa for ThailandThe marriage visa in Thailand is also called the Thai “O” visa. This visa is for “Other” reasons for visiting Thailand. It applies to you being married to a Thai national or having a Thai child. It is one of the most common visas issued in Thailand after the tourist visa and educational visa. As stated you can also use this visa to visit family in Thailand such as your in-laws or your children. If you have minor children then you can also extend this visa in Thailand or opt for a Thai guardian visa.

The documentary requirements for the marriage visa for Thailand is as follows. These visa application documents you need to have with you when you apply for the 90 day marriage visa at a Thai Embassy in your country.

  • 1.       Copy of your Thai marriage certificate (both versions);
  • 2.       Copy of your Thai wife’s Tabian Baan or “House Papers”;
  • 3.       Copy of your passport;
  • 4.       Copy of your Thai wife’s ID card or Thai passport;

These are the basic documents when applying for the Thai marriage visa which they will require at the Thai Embassy. Note that each Embassy in Asia has their own waiting period. In Malaysia you get your visa the following day whereas the Thai Embassy in Cambodia you will have to wait up to 5 days. Once you enter Thailand you only have 90 days to extend this visa to a 12 month visa. You will need the following documents for the extension for the marriage visa for Thailand.

  • 1.       Copy of your Thai marriage certificate (both versions);
  • 2.       Copy of your Thai wife’s Tabian Baan or “House Papers”;
  • 3.       Copy of your passport;
  • 4.       Copy of your Thai wife’s ID card or Thai passport;
  • 5.       Copy of marriage photos or you and your wife together;
  • 6.       Copy of your bank account showing 400,000THB or 40,000THB in income per month;
  • 7.       Copy of a map to your house, villa or apartment in Thailand;
  • 8.       Copy of your children birth certificates if they are Thai nationals;

The process takes about 4 weeks to complete. Multiple entry visas you might be able to obtain in your home country but not at the Thai Embassies in Asia as they stopped issuing them a few years ago due to visa abuse.
